How a Wels catfish sees your lure
Which lure colour a Wels catfish can actually see, at your depth and in your water. 2 cone types, peak 535 nm. Ranked contrast for 54 colours.
Silurus glanis
Measured in the same family
No spectral measurement exists for this species. The cone peaks are a family-level substitution from the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and other siluriforms. This is a coarser assumption than a same-genus one; the broad "which end of the spectrum" answer is reliable, the fine ranking between adjacent colours is not. Its retina uses the A2 (porphyropsin) chromophore, which pushes its long-wavelength sensitivity well to the red of what an A1 retina would give. Many freshwater fish shift the A1/A2 ratio with season and temperature, so real sensitivity drifts through the year. Catfish have very low visual acuity and hunt largely by smell, taste and the lateral line. Colour is genuinely a minor cue for this species, and the app should not be read as suggesting otherwise.
Spectral sensitivity
| Cone peaks | λmax | Chromophore |
|---|---|---|
| Short | 420 nm | A2 |
| Medium | 535 nm | A2 |
| Rod | 525 nm | A2 |
Rods do the work at dawn, dusk and night — which is when most people fish.

Questions people actually ask
Can a Wels catfish see colour?
Yes, but only just. It has 2 cone types, peaking at 420 nm, 535 nm, so it has a single dimension of hue where a human has 2.
Where does this data come from?
No measurement exists for this species. The cone peaks are a family-level substitution — reliable for which end of the spectrum, not for fine ranking.
